Matching a painted blue to a fabric sample is a losing exercise, because paint shifts with the light in your room and the artist mixed that blue for the painting, not for your sofa. What we do instead is find a piece whose blue sits in the same family, then let the 14-day trial settle it.

Choose a warmer, lighter blue with visible texture and avoid deep navy. Dark blue in a dim room turns into a flat black shape from a few steps away, and you lose everything the artist did in the paint. In low light we point people toward pieces where the blue is broken up with pale or warm passages, so the work still reads at night.

Aim for roughly two thirds of the sofa's width, which usually means 90 to 120 cm (36 to 48 in) wide for a standard three-seat sofa. Hang it so the centre sits about 145 cm (57 in) from the floor. Too small is the most common mistake; blue needs presence to read as depth.

Choose a warm, violet-leaning blue like ultramarine for most bedrooms, because it stays soft under evening lamp light. Cool, green-leaning blues such as phthalo or teal look sharp in daylight but can turn flat at night. If your bedroom gets strong morning sun, either works. In a dim room, go warm.

Modern blue pigments like ultramarine, cobalt, and phthalo blue are rated lightfast and hold their colour for decades under normal indoor conditions. Direct sunlight is still the enemy of any painting, so keep the work off walls that get hours of hot sun. Dust it with a dry, soft cloth and it needs no other care.
