Both. Most pieces are pure colored pencil or graphite on artboard, built in layers with no paint at all. A few are mixed, with watercolor, acrylic, ink, and colored pencil worked together on canvas. The mixed pieces behave like paintings on the wall and can go almost anywhere. The pure pencil and graphite work should stay out of direct sunlight and away from damp rooms.

We pack every piece ourselves in the Vancouver studio, with the drawn surface protected and the board braced so it cannot shift or flex inside the box. Shipping is free and fully insured, so if anything reaches you marked, we deal with it directly. Keep the packing until the piece is up, and always lift the work by its edges, never by the drawn surface.

They expect it to look light and sketchy. In person these surfaces are dense and layered, much closer to a painting than to a page from a sketchbook, which is why photographs undersell them. Colored pencil art is a finished original artwork, and major museums collect it. The pencil is only the delivery method for pigment, the same pigment found in paint. A finished piece represents weeks of layering by hand and is signed by the artist. The word drawing describes the technique, not the seriousness of the work.

Because works on paper are undervalued relative to the hours in them, detailed realist pieces are often available for a few hundred dollars. Price scales with size, detail, and the artist's track record.

Most colored pencil works are small to medium, because the medium's slowness makes very large pieces rare. That suits the work: the detail is meant to be seen from a few feet away. Hang one where people naturally stand close, such as a hallway, office, or bedside wall, rather than across a large open room.

Look closely at the eyes and the texture. In skilled work the strokes follow the direction fur or feathers actually grow, edges sharpen in light and soften in shadow, and eyes have layered depth with a bright catchlight. If the surface looks scribbled or the outlines look traced, keep looking.

Frame it behind glass with an acid-free mat and hang it out of direct sunlight, the standard care for any work on paper. UV-protective glass is a worthwhile upgrade in bright rooms. Behind proper framing the surface is sealed from dust and touch, and the piece needs nothing beyond an occasional dusting of the frame.

Skip colored pencil if what you love is thick, sculptural paint texture and visible brushwork, because pencil surfaces are smooth and sit behind glass. It is also not the medium for a huge statement wall, since large pieces are rare. For those walls, an oil or acrylic on canvas is the honest recommendation.
