Why there is nothing to buy online

Framing here is quoted for each piece at the counter. Two pieces of the same size can need different frames: one may be a poster that goes behind a plain sheet of glazing (the glass or acrylic at the front), and the other a pastel that needs extra depth and a UV filter. A fixed online price would be wrong for one of them.

So this site has no framing product, no cart and no checkout for framing, and the code is shown in person at the shop. We tell you the quote for your piece before any work starts.

A painting on canvas is quoted the same way, by what the piece itself needs. Flight into Infinity 02 is an oil on canvas from our gallery, 120 by 150 cm, showing a lighthouse on a small rock in a calm blue sea.

Phaedra oil painting: serene seascape, lighthouse on rocks, cloudy sky with pink, flying gulls. Oil on canvas.

What moves a framing quote

  • Size. A larger piece uses more of every material.
  • Moulding. This is the shaped length of wood or metal the frame is cut from. Wide and carved mouldings cost more than plain ones.
  • Glazing. Plain glass, UV-filtering glass, anti-reflective glass and acrylic are priced differently.
  • Depth. An object or a deep canvas needs a deeper frame than a sheet of paper.
  • Labour. Stitching a textile or shaping a mount for an object takes longer than hinging a print.

Our page on custom framing cost explains each of these in detail.

Size and depth both matter for a canvas. Forgotten Planets is an oil on canvas, 100 by 120 cm, showing a painted box with a castle, a pink house and a large round planet on its sides, and it is one of the originals in our gallery.

Before you come

How it works

  1. 1

Bring it in, or send photographs

Walk in to 1242 Davie Street during opening hours. If you are not in Vancouver, send the dimensions and a photograph and we will work from that.

  2. 2

We look at the actual piece

What it is made of, what condition it is in, and where it is going to hang all change the answer. You get a straight recommendation and a price for your piece, not a rate card.

  3. 3

It is made by hand and fitted

Cut to the piece, using conservation materials, and finished with hanging hardware rated for the actual weight.
