What happens at the counter

  1. We look at the piece. We check what it is made of, whether it is flat or has depth, and what condition it is in.
  2. We measure it. Height, width and, for a canvas or an object, depth.
  3. We hold samples against it. A moulding is the shaped length of wood or metal a frame is cut from. We place corner samples and mat colours (a mat is the border of card around a picture) against your piece, so you see each choice beside the real thing.
  4. We choose the glazing with you. Glazing is the sheet of glass or acrylic at the front. The right one depends on what the piece is and on the light where it will hang.
  5. We give you a quote. We tell you the figure before any work starts. Our page on custom framing cost explains what moves it.
  6. You decide. Leave the piece with us, or take it home and think about it.

Measuring comes before anything else, because paintings are made in many sizes. Fractured Harmony, an acrylic on canvas with white bands crossing a green background and spots of red, is 88.9 by 111.8 cm.

Peyman Mehdizadeh acrylic: dynamic white and black jagged lines intersect on a vibrant green background.

Why in-house framing matters

Your piece stays at one address from the day you leave it to the day you collect it. Each extra trip in a vehicle is a moment when a corner can be knocked or a sheet creased, and in-house work removes those trips. It also means any question about your piece is answered at the address where the work is done.

Who this workshop is for

If you live or work in the West End, Davie Village, Yaletown, Coal Harbour or downtown Vancouver, this is a framing counter you can carry your piece to. Most of what people bring in was bought somewhere else, and you do not need to have bought art from the gallery to use the workshop.

What we frame here

Art, photographs, prints, posters, maps, diplomas, awards and certificates. Objects and textiles go into shadow boxes, frames built deep enough to hold them. We also repair and restore frames, frame oversized pieces, frame records and album art, and stretch canvas. Our what we frame page links to each service, and custom framing explains the materials and methods.

If you need it fast

Rush framing is 24 hours when the moulding and glazing for your piece are in stock. Tell us your date when you walk in, and we will tell you whether it is possible. Details are on the 24 hour rush framing page.

Large or fragile pieces, and people outside Vancouver

If you live outside Vancouver, send the dimensions and a photograph through our contact page and we reply with what the piece needs. Our guide on what to bring to a framing appointment lists what helps most.
