Above a bed, choose a painting between half and two thirds the width of the headboard, usually 75 to 110 cm (30 to 43 in) wide for a queen bed. Hang it 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10 in) above the headboard so the two read as one calm unit.

Choose sage when the room needs quiet, and a deeper forest or emerald green when the room needs weight. Sage suits bedrooms and pale, soft spaces; deep greens hold their own beside dark wood and in dining rooms. In a dim room sage can wash out to grey, so go deeper.
