Yalda Night Gifts That Last: Choosing an Original Painting
Updated By VanArtHub Curatorial TeamShare
Yalda night in 2026 falls on the evening of Monday, December 21. The Yalda gifts and foods that our sources describe are fruit, nuts and sweets, and they are eaten during the gathering. An original painting is a Yalda night gift that stays in the house afterwards. We are VanArtHub, a Vancouver gallery that sells original Persian miniatures and contemporary paintings that draw on Persian tradition, and this guide explains how to choose one for a host, for parents or for a family, and when to order it.
Who this guide is for, and what we do not claim
This guide is for a guest who wants to bring something that will still be in the house in spring. The advice on choosing, wrapping and timing applies whichever seller you buy from.
Giving a painting at Yalda is our own suggestion. The sources we read record no such custom. We are also the wrong gallery for some readers. Our works are new and made by living artists, so we have no antiques and no posters of museum pages, and we ship no printed copies.
What Yalda night is, in two paragraphs
Yalda (Shab-e Yalda, also called Shab-e Chelleh) is the night of the winter solstice, the last night of autumn, and Anna Krasnowolska writes in the Encyclopaedia Iranica that it is the longest and the darkest night of the year. UNESCO, which added Yalda/Chella to its list of intangible cultural heritage in 2022, describes families in Iran and Afghanistan gathering at the houses of elders around a table with a lamp, water, and red fruits such as pomegranates, watermelons and grapes. Sweets, dried fruits and nuts are eaten during the gathering.
After a fine dinner, Mahmoud Omidsalar writes in the Iranica, the older people tell tales, and a favourite pastime is taking an omen from the Divan of Hafez, the poet's collected poems. The book is opened at random and each poem is read in the name of one person, in the order in which people are seated. UNESCO also names gifts to new in-laws, brides and children, and Omidsalar records that young engaged men send a platter of seven kinds of fruit. Our page on Yalda night and Persian art covers the night in full.
Fortune Teller (First Sight) by Reza Daryakenari is a staged photograph on Epson canvas with varnish, 125 x 90 cm (49.2 x 35.4 in). Three figures sit at a table covered in red embroidered cloth. An older man offers grapes to a woman, and a bowl of grapes and pomegranates stands on the table. We show it for what is in the picture: people gathered at a table with the red fruit of this night. Its product page makes no mention of Yalda, and the work is a photograph.
Why we think a painting suits this night, and where it does not
This is our view. A painting is a gift to a household: the family gathers at the home of its elders, and a painting hangs on a wall that everyone in that home shares. It can be opened with the whole family in the room. And it stays: the fruit is eaten that night, and the painting is still on the wall the next December.
A painting is a personal choice, and you are choosing for a wall that belongs to someone else. It also costs more than a box of sweets. For the choice, there is the 14-day trial described below. For the cost, choose a small work, or give one work together with several relatives. Both are ordinary ways to give art.
If you do not know the home or the family's taste, bring fruit this year and look at the walls while you are there. For more ideas, see our gift-worthy art collection.
How to choose a painting for a household
Settle these seven things before you pay, with any seller.
| What to settle | A good answer | Ask more questions when |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | One household: hosts, parents or a couple | One guest among many |
| Where it will hang | You can name the room and the wall | You have never been inside the home |
| The size | Width and height in centimetres, compared with the free wall | Only "large" or "small" |
| The subject | A gathering at a table, a poem, or gold and ornament | A story scene whose ending you have not read |
| Hafez | The family reads him, and the seller says what the link to the poet is | "Inspired by Hafez" and nothing more |
| Wrapping and opening | The seller says how the work is packed, and whether it travels flat or rolled | The seller cannot say |
| Return terms for a gift | Written: the number of days, the day the count starts, who pays the return shipping | "Final sale" |
Who it is for, and where it will hang. The best case is a gift for hosts, parents or a couple whose home you know. Name the wall. The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) tells owners to avoid direct sunlight, and to avoid display near heating and cooling units or on poorly insulated exterior walls, so the wall above a radiator is a poor place for the gift.
The size. Ask a relative to measure the free width of the wall, and compare in centimetres. The three works here run from 30 x 40 cm to 125 x 90 cm. One person can carry the smallest into the house. For the largest, CCI says a minimum of two people are required to carry an easel-sized painting safely. Our guide to Persian wall art for a living room gives the sums for the wall above a sofa.
Muraqqa': The Gold Shamseh by Kamal al-Din Ghotb is a Persian miniature in oil and gold, 30 x 40 cm (11.8 x 15.7 in), the smallest of the three works and the easiest to give. It is an album page built around a gold sunburst medallion, called a shamseh, with a panel of calligraphy on gold, two panels of roses and birds, and a small scene of a falconry party at rest. See the Kamal al-Din Ghotb collection, and our guide to buying a Persian miniature.
The subject. For a family home we would choose people gathered at a table, a painting that starts from a poem, or a page of gold and ornament. Read the story before you give a story scene: our guide to choosing a Shahnameh scene says which scenes are sad or violent.
Whether they read Hafez. Ehsan Yarshater writes in the Iranica that if a Persian home has one book of poetry, it is likely to be the Divan of Hafez, which is widely used for telling fortunes. For a family that opens the book on this night, a painting that begins from his verse has a clear reason to be in the room. Ask the seller what the link to the poet is: our guide to Rumi and Hafez paintings lists the questions, and our page on Persian poetry in painting shows how earlier painters treated him.
The Secret of Creation by Roshan is acrylic on canvas, 101.6 x 101.6 cm (40 x 40 in). A figure with long purple hair sits at the upper left, half hidden by waves of yellow and light blue. Its product page says the painter started from a verse of Hafez and painted an idea found in it: love as the beginning of existence, and reason as the thing that gives it order. The page leaves the verse unnamed. The work's link to this night is the reading of Hafez. See the Roshan collection.
The return terms for a gift. Get them in writing before you pay. With a gift, the count can start weeks before the receiver sees the work. Ours starts on the day of delivery.
Wrapping, carrying and opening the gift
CCI writes that most damage to paintings and their frames occurs during handling, and a gift is handled more than most paintings.
Start with the cold. A parcel delivered in December may have spent hours in an unheated truck. For a wrapped painting that has been exposed to cold, CCI advises allowing 24 hours indoors before opening and unwrapping it, so that moisture does not condense on cold surfaces. Then open the parcel yourself and check the work.
We do not promise gift wrapping, so plan without it. The painting arrives in protective packing. Present it in that packing, or re-wrap it with the protective layers left on and the gift paper around the outside, so that no paper or tape touches the picture surface. CCI's note on wrapping asks the packer to mark the front and the back for the people who will unwrap.
On the night, hold a small framed painting with one hand on each side, and never carry a painting by its hanging wire or by the top of its frame. One more CCI rule fits a gift: do not hand a painting to another person, and place it where the person can lift it. So put the gift down on a cleared sofa and let the hosts open it there, away from the Yalda table, because CCI tells owners to keep food and drinks away from paintings.
Yalda 2026: the date, and when a painting has to leave our gallery
The US Naval Observatory gives the December solstice of 2026 as December 21, at 12:50 in the afternoon, Pacific Standard Time. Omidsalar gives the first day of winter in the traditional calendar as 1 Dey, 22 December, and the night that opens it is the night of Yalda. So Yalda is kept on the night of December 21, which is a Monday in 2026.
The dates below are counted from our own stated delivery times and nothing else. The last business day before that Monday is Friday, December 18, 2026. Counting our longest delivery time back from that Friday, a painting has to leave our gallery by Wednesday, December 9, 2026 for an address in Canada (7 business days) and by Friday, December 4, 2026 for an address in the USA (10 business days).
| What | Date |
|---|---|
| December solstice | Monday, December 21, 2026, at 12:50 in the afternoon, Pacific Standard Time |
| Yalda night | The evening of Monday, December 21, 2026 |
| Leaves our gallery by, for an address in Canada | Wednesday, December 9, 2026 |
| Leaves our gallery by, for an address in the USA | Friday, December 4, 2026 |
We cannot promise a delivery day. Order earlier than these dates, and first ask us through the form on the product page whether that work can arrive in time at your address.
Our page on Yalda night gives two later dates, Thursday, December 10 for Canada and Monday, December 7 for the USA. Those are the last days for a painting that arrives on Monday, December 21 itself, by the same count of business days. The dates in this guide are earlier because we count back from the Friday before.
How buying a gift from us works
Every painting we ship is an original, signed and one of a kind, and each work arrives with a Certificate of Authenticity. Shipping is free and fully insured: 3 to 7 business days in Canada and 5 to 10 to the USA. A stretched canvas ships flat in a rigid box. A work on unstretched canvas, or one too large to travel on its stretcher bars, ships rolled in a heavy tube, and we tell you before it ships which way it will travel. If a carrier asks you for a customs or brokerage fee, contact us before you pay it.
The product pages do not say whether a work comes with a frame, so ask us through the form on that page. Framing is done in-house at our gallery and quoted per piece: see our custom framing page.
The 14-day trial starts on the day of delivery, whatever day you give the work. Send it back within those 14 days for a full refund, and we pay the return shipping. If you order weeks ahead, ask us in writing before you pay what the last return day will be, and keep all the packing. The full terms are on our Buy with Confidence page.
Our gallery is at 1242 Davie Street in Vancouver's West End, and the opening hours are on our West End gallery page. Contact us before you come, so we can confirm the work is at the gallery that day. Our guide on how to buy Persian art covers ownership history and cross-border rules.
Each product page has one more option, Buy Print File: a high-resolution digital file of the image that you print yourself, for personal printing only. Nothing is shipped, we email the file within 48 hours, and copyright stays with the artist. A print made from that file is a reproduction, and the painting itself still exists once.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good gift to bring to a Yalda night gathering?
Fruit, nuts and sweets are the gifts and foods that our sources describe for Yalda night, and they are eaten during the gathering. UNESCO lists pomegranates, watermelons, dried fruits and nuts on the table, and the Encyclopaedia Iranica records a platter of seven kinds of fruit sent as a present. A painting for the household is our own suggestion for a gift that stays.
What date is Yalda night in 2026?
Yalda night in 2026 is the evening of Monday, December 21. The US Naval Observatory gives the December solstice as December 21, 2026, at 12:50 in the afternoon, Pacific Standard Time. The Encyclopaedia Iranica describes Yalda as the night of the winter solstice, the last night of autumn, before the first day of winter on 22 December.
How do families take an omen from Hafez on Yalda night?
The Divan of Hafez is opened at random, and the poem on that page is read as the omen. In a group, the Encyclopaedia Iranica explains, each poem is read in the name of one person, following the order in which people are seated. The same encyclopaedia calls this reading a favourite pastime of the night.
Is there a custom of giving paintings on Yalda night?
No source we read for this guide records one. UNESCO names gifts to new in-laws, brides and children, and the Encyclopaedia Iranica records a platter of seven kinds of fruit sent by young engaged men. Giving a painting is our own suggestion: the gift goes to a household, it is opened together, and it stays on the wall.
Is Fortune Teller (First Sight) a picture of Yalda night?
No. Fortune Teller (First Sight) by Reza Daryakenari is a staged photograph on Epson canvas with varnish, 125 x 90 cm, and its product page makes no mention of Yalda. Three figures sit at a table covered in red cloth, with a bowl of grapes and pomegranates. We show it because the picture shares the table and the red fruit of the night.
When should I order a painting so it arrives before Yalda night?
Order before the date the painting has to leave our gallery: Wednesday, December 9, 2026 for an address in Canada, and Friday, December 4, 2026 for an address in the USA. Both dates are counted back from Friday, December 18 using our longest delivery times. We cannot promise a delivery day, so order earlier and ask us first.
Will a painting from VanArtHub arrive gift-wrapped?
Plan for protective packing and no gift wrap. We do not promise gift wrapping, so the safe plan is to re-wrap the work yourself or to present it in its packing. Keep the protective layers on and put your gift paper around the outside, so that no paper or tape touches the picture surface.
How does the 14-day trial work when the painting is a gift?
The 14-day trial starts on the day of delivery, whatever day you give the work. Within those 14 days the painting can come back for a full refund, and we pay the return shipping. If you order weeks ahead, ask us in writing before you pay what the last return day will be, and keep all the packing.
Do you ship a Yalda gift to the United States?
Yes, shipping to the USA is free and fully insured, and takes 5 to 10 business days. For Yalda 2026 a painting has to leave our gallery by Friday, December 4, 2026, and we cannot promise a delivery day in December. If a carrier asks you for a customs or brokerage fee, contact us before you pay it.
Can I look at a gift at your Davie Street gallery before I order?
Contact us before you come, so we can confirm the work is at the gallery that day. Our gallery is at 1242 Davie Street in Vancouver's West End, and the opening hours are on our West End gallery page. Bring the width of the wall where the gift will hang, and a photo of the room if you have one.
