About this artwork

An album page in the muraqqa' tradition, built around a gold shamseh at its centre: a sunburst medallion ringed in gold knotwork, its lapis-blue field carrying a six-petalled orange rosette among white and turquoise lotus blossoms on gold vine scrolls, with black cartouches of gold leaf-sprays set into a red band of arabesque. Around it the page gathers one panel of each craft of the Persian book arts. A large illuminated panel holds nasta'liq in cloud-shaped reserves on a dense gold ground, pressed with oval seals. Two gol-o-morgh panels of crimson roses, white blossoms and yellow poppies carry a blue-grey songbird and a teal bird, divided by a strip of orange marbled paper. Diagonal chalipa couplets run on a lilac ground. A figurative miniature on gold shows a falconry party at rest - turbaned figures in red, orange and blue, a white horse in a blue saddlecloth, a falcon on a gloved wrist, beneath a blossoming tree and a plane tree turning to autumn. Below it, a black-ink siyah-qalam drawing of long-tailed birds moves through khataei foliage.

Kamal al-Din Ghotb has practised Persian painting for 41 years. He trained at the School of Fine Arts, took his degree in painting at Azad University, and holds Iran's Grade One Artistic Degree, the national credential recognised as equivalent to a doctorate. Each panel of this page is drawn and coloured by hand in oil and then lit with gold.

At 30 by 40 centimetres it is an intimate work, made to be hung where people stand close to it: a study, a reading corner, a hallway passed every day. The longer you look, the more it gives back.
