About this artwork

Two armies meet across a pale blue plain. Turbaned riders hold the line beneath an orange banner, trumpeters raise long gold karnay horns, and the whole encounter is set inside columns of Persian verse crowned by a gold and lapis cartouche. This is Naghsh-e Khial, the pattern of imagination, painted in the classical negargari tradition of the Persian miniature.

Kamal al-Din Ghotb has practised Persian painting for 41 years. He trained at the School of Fine Arts, took his degree in painting at Azad University, and holds Iran's Grade One Artistic Degree, the national credential recognised as equivalent to a doctorate. Dozens of figures fill this panel, many no larger than a fingernail, each one drawn and coloured by hand in oil and then lit with gold.

At 30 by 40 centimetres it is an intimate work, made to be hung where people stand close to it: a study, a reading corner, a hallway passed every day. The longer you look, the more it gives back.
