About this artwork

A haloed rider crosses a lapis sky on Buraq, the winged steed with a crowned human face, carried upward through scrolling gold clouds by a host of angels. Below, the domes and minarets of a city rise out of pale rock, and at the lower right stands the Kaaba in its black kiswa. This is the Mi'raj, the Night Journey and Ascension, the subject of the classical Mi'raj-nama manuscripts, painted here in the negargari tradition of the Persian miniature and framed by couplets in nasta'liq script.

Kamal al-Din Ghotb has practised Persian painting for 41 years. He trained at the School of Fine Arts, took his degree in painting at Azad University, and holds Iran's Grade One Artistic Degree, the national credential recognised as equivalent to a doctorate. More than a hundred figures fill this panel, many no larger than a fingernail, each one drawn and coloured by hand in oil and then lit with gold.

At 30 by 40 centimetres it is an intimate work, made to be hung where people stand close to it: a study, a reading corner, a hallway passed every day. The longer you look, the more it gives back.
