One large canvas makes a decision; a scatter of small frames makes a committee. On a big wall, a single statement piece reads instantly from across the room and makes the space feel finished. Gallery walls have their place, but they take curation and dozens of nail holes to look intentional. Every large work here is a signed, one-of-a-kind original with the scale already built in.
How large should a statement piece be?
Over a sofa or console, 60 to 75 percent of the furniture's width is the range designers actually use. On an open feature wall, bigger: a canvas around 120 to 150 cm wide holds a typical living room wall on its own. Measure with painter's tape on the wall before you decide. If you land between two sizes, we would choose the larger one every time.
What is the difference between a large original painting and a large print?
A large original painting was painted at that size by hand, so the surface carries real brushwork and texture, while a large print is a smaller image enlarged and pushed through a machine. That difference shows up close. On an original you can see where the artist loaded the brush, where the paint sat thick, where a line was reworked. On a print the same detail is a flat pattern of ink that looks the same everywhere across the canvas.
It also changes what you own. Every painting here is one of a kind and made for the dimension it occupies: living room feature walls, hotel lobby focal points, boardroom walls, restaurant centrepieces. A print can be reordered a thousand times. Yours cannot. Each work is signed, ships free and fully insured, three to seven business days inside Canada and five to ten to the USA, and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity naming the artist and the piece.
How much ceiling height do you need for a large painting?
A standard 8 foot (244 cm) ceiling comfortably takes a painting up to about 120 cm (47 in) tall, and past that the piece starts to crowd the ceiling line. The empty wall around the work is what makes it read as art instead of cladding. Leave roughly 20 to 30 cm of clear wall above the top edge, and set the middle of the painting near eye level, which for most rooms is 145 to 150 cm from the floor. Run those numbers and a 150 cm tall canvas really needs a 9 foot ceiling or higher. In a condo with 8 foot ceilings, buy width instead of height: a 180 by 90 cm horizontal canvas reads as big and leaves the ceiling alone.
What size art works on a stairwell or a double-height wall?
On a stairwell or a double-height wall, go taller and narrower than feels normal, and centre the piece on the middle of the stair run rather than on either floor level. There is no single correct eye level on a wall you see from below, from the side, and while moving, so treat the whole wall as the frame and place the art inside it. A single vertical canvas of 150 to 200 cm works well, and so does a stacked pair with a tight gap between them, hung on one shared vertical axis. One practical point from packing and delivering these: keep the bottom edge at least 130 cm above the nearest tread. Shoulders, backpacks and vacuum handles all pass through that zone, and unglazed canvas survives that better than glass.
How much does a large canvas weigh, and what should you hang it on?
Most large stretched canvases weigh between 3 and 14 kg (7 and 31 lb), so the hanging question is really about your wall rather than the painting. Drywall alone is the weak point, not the hardware on the back of the piece.

Framed work with glass adds weight fast, sometimes doubling the number in that middle column. Concrete and brick need a masonry bit and sleeve anchors, and plaster over lath is unpredictable, so find the joist. How do large paintings get shipped, and what happens if one arrives damaged?
Large paintings travel in a purpose-built box from our Vancouver studio, fully insured, with shipping free to every address in Canada and the United States. Plan for 3 to 7 business days inside Canada and 5 to 10 to the USA, and expect the longer end of those windows on the biggest pieces, because they move on freight services rather than as ordinary parcels. Insured is the word that matters. If a corner arrives dented, send us photos and we replace or refund the piece; the claim is ours to file, not yours. The 14-day home trial applies at this size too, and we pay the return shipping even on a canvas that needs two people to lift.
Measure before you buy, because the wall is rarely the problem. Doorways, elevator depth and the turn at the top of a staircase are what stop a 180 cm canvas. That is the honest tradeoff with big work: it is hard to move, hard to store, and it commits the room. If you want the impact but not the commitment, a large statement painting around 120 cm gives you most of the presence at a size one person can rehang, and large abstract paintings hold up on a big wall better than detailed work does.

Can I see one of your large canvases in person before I buy it?
Yes, if you can get to Vancouver, since we take private viewings by appointment at the studio. Tell us which pieces you want to see and we will have them out so you can judge scale, surface and the painted edges in daylight. Everything ships from here anyway. If you cannot travel, upload a photo of your wall to our room preview tool and see the painting on it to scale.
How do you pack a canvas that is over a metre wide?
Corner protectors first, then a wrap that never touches the painted face, then a rigid double-wall box built around the stretcher and marked as artwork. Large canvases go out stretched, never rolled, so nothing has to be re-stretched at your end. Shipping is free and fully insured on every order. Keep the box for at least the 14-day trial, because a return has to travel in it.
For a very big wall, is one large painting better than a group of smaller ones?
One large canvas is better, as long as the wall is genuinely wide and unbroken. A single piece reads as a decision. A grid of small ones reads as filler, and it takes far longer to hang straight. We suggest a set only when a doorway, a thermostat or a corner cuts the wall up. Our free art advisory will lay out both options against your floor plan at no cost.
Can you hold a large painting for me until my renovation is finished?
Yes, we will hold it, though not indefinitely, because the piece is one of a kind and someone else may want it. Give us the date your painters or movers finish and we will reserve it to that date. If your work runs late after you have bought it, we can also keep the piece boxed at the Vancouver studio so it never sits in dust on site.
If the original is sold or over my budget, can I buy a large print of it instead?
No, we sell originals only, so there is no print of any painting on this site. The single exception across the whole store is fine art photography by one photographer, sold as signed limited editions. What we do instead is find you a smaller original by the same artist, since prices start around $72, or point you to a similar work that is still available.
Do you ship large canvases to the United States, and who deals with the border paperwork?
We ship large work to the USA and we prepare the export paperwork here at the Vancouver studio. Orders usually arrive in about 5 to 10 business days, with free, fully insured shipping. We declare the piece as an original artwork with the artist's name, title, medium and value, which is what a border officer needs to see. If your carrier asks you for documents, message us and we will resend them.
What hanging hardware do I need for a large canvas?
For a canvas over about 100 cm wide, use two hooks spaced a third of the way in from each side, each rated well above the actual weight, and fix into studs or use proper drywall anchors. Two points stop the piece tilting. Most large canvases weigh 3 to 8 kg. Have a second person hold it while you mark.
Can a large painting hang in a stairwell?
A stairwell is one of the best places for a large painting, because you see it from several heights as you climb. Centre it on the sight line of someone halfway up, not at standard gallery height. Measure the turns, doorways, and landings first. A 150 cm canvas will not get around a tight corner.
Does large wall art work with an 8 foot ceiling?
Large art works fine under an 8 foot ceiling as long as you choose a wide piece rather than a tall one. Keep the top edge at least 25 to 30 cm below the ceiling so the wall does not look overfilled. A canvas 150 cm wide by 90 cm high reads as generous without crowding the room.
How much more does a large original painting cost than a medium one?
Doubling the width of a canvas roughly quadruples the painted area, so expect a large original to cost two to four times a medium one, not twice as much. Materials rise, stretcher bars get heavier, and the artist spends far more days on it. Crating and handling add cost too, though shipping stays free to you.
Will a large canvas arrive stretched or rolled up?
Most of our large canvases ship stretched and ready to hang, packed in a custom box with corner protection. Very large pieces are sometimes rolled in a tube for safety, and we tell you that before you buy. A rolled canvas needs stretching by a local framer, so ask us first if that would be a problem.
How can I tell a large canvas is hand-painted and not a printed reproduction?
On a hand-painted large canvas the brushwork changes across the surface, thick in some places and thin in others, and the sides show real paint carried over the edge. Printed canvases look uniform at any scale and often carry a soft, dotted texture. Ours are painted by hand and signed, with the artist's certificate included.
When is a large painting the wrong choice?
Skip a large painting when the wall is narrow, broken up by doors and switches, or seen only from a metre away, because a big piece needs viewing distance to work. Small rooms with a lot of furniture do better with a medium canvas. Skip it as well if you move house often, since large art is awkward to transport.
