Yes, regularly. If a canvas is thin, stapled on the outside edge, or made quickly in a colour that happens to be popular, it does not go in this group no matter how large it is. We look for a sound stretcher, finished edges, real depth in the surface, and an artist whose work we can point to across several years. Scale alone is never enough.

It names the artist, the title, the medium and the exact size, and confirms the work is an original one of a kind piece painted by hand. It is signed and it travels with the painting, so it should stay with the work if you ever pass the piece on. Keep it with your insurance papers rather than taping it to the back of the canvas, where it gets lost.

A float frame is a shallow tray frame that holds the canvas with a small gap around the edge, so the painting appears to sit inside the frame without touching it. Abstract work benefits because the gap gives the composition a clean stop. It also protects the corners. Unframed canvases look fine on gallery walls but chip in real homes.

Texture matters because it is the part of an abstract painting a photograph cannot copy, and it is what keeps the work interesting after the first month. Thick paint, palette knife ridges, scraped-back layers, and visible ground all change as the light moves through the day. A flat, evenly coloured abstract has nowhere left to go once you have seen it.

Large abstracts cost more because paint, linen, and stretcher timber scale with area, and a 180 cm canvas takes several times the material and studio time of a 60 cm one. Handling and crating add more. Price rarely rises in a straight line with size, so the middle sizes, around 100 to 120 cm, usually give the most presence per dollar.

Gallery scale means the painting is large enough to hold a wall on its own, roughly 120 cm (48 inches) and up on the long side. At that size the work sets the mood of the room instead of decorating it. Below about 80 cm, an abstract needs company: a second piece, a shelf, or a tight group to give it weight.

Look for evidence of decisions: layers where the artist changed direction, edges that were painted out, marks made at different speeds. Decorative abstracts are made in one pass to a formula and look the same from every distance. Walk up close, then step back six paces. A serious piece gives you two different experiences, a poster-style one gives you one.

Clean heavy texture with a dry, soft, natural-bristle brush, working from the top down, and never with water, cleaner, or a cloth that can catch on a ridge. Dust settles in the valleys of thick paint and a damp wipe turns it into grey streaks. Twice a year is plenty. For anything worse than dust, ask us before you touch it.

Do not buy an abstract if you cannot say what you like about this particular one, because abstraction gives you nothing to fall back on when the first impression fades.
