"Original art is for rich people"

The four- and five-figure work in the South Granville galleries is real, but it is the top of the market, not the whole of it. At last count, 13 of our own 155 originals were under $700 CAD, and Federation Gallery on Granville Island lists many works under $500 by its own site.

"I do not know enough to choose"

There is no exam. The only qualification is that you want to keep looking at the piece. Taste sharpens by looking, and your first purchase is how the looking starts.

"What if I get it wrong?"

Why Vancouver is a good city to start in

You have every tier of the market within reach: established galleries on South Granville, artist-run and juried spaces on Granville Island, the Vancouver Art Gallery's rental program for trying before committing, and online galleries with published prices. And the local artist pool is deep: several of the artists we represent live and work here, so a first purchase can also be a piece of the city.

One honest caution: only 5 of the 13 galleries we surveyed on 4 August 2026 publish their prices. As a first-time buyer, gravitate to sellers who tell you the number up front, whoever they are.

How much should I spend on my first original painting?

Is original art a good investment?

Buy for the wall, not the portfolio. Most art does not appreciate predictably, and anyone promising returns is selling something. What a good original reliably pays is daily: you own the only one, and it does not lose that.

What documents should come with a first purchase?

At minimum a receipt naming the artist, title, medium, and size. A signed Certificate of Authenticity is better, and every VanArtHub piece includes one.

Should I buy in person or online?
