Original Ink Paintings

Original ink paintings, from loose brushed washes to fine pen work, each one hand-made, signed, and the only one of its kind.

What kind of room suits an ink painting?

Ink suits rooms built on contrast and clear lines rather than colour: minimalist interiors, mid-century furniture, pale walls, wood and stone, and any space where a loud canvas would fight the furniture. The reason is what ink does. It is a medium of two extremes, able to hold the loosest brushed wash and the most controlled pen line, sometimes in the same piece, so the work reads as graphic and calm from across the room.

That makes ink a good answer for a study, a hallway, a bedroom wall, or a dining room where the table and chairs already carry the colour. It also sits well beside other art, because black and grey rarely argue with a neighbouring painting. Every ink work here is an original, signed by the artist, and it ships free and fully insured with a Certificate of Authenticity.

What is an ink painting?

An ink painting is a work made with liquid ink and a brush or pen, usually on paper, built from drawn lines and layered washes of diluted tone. The defining fact of the medium is that ink is permanent the moment it touches paper. There is no scraping back and no painting over. Every stroke you see is a decision the artist committed to, which is why collectors talk about line confidence: one sure brushstroke carries more life than an hour of cautious correction. Each ink work in this collection is an original, made by hand and signed, never a reproduction.

Where does ink painting come from?

The deepest ink tradition comes from East Asia, where Chinese and Japanese artists have painted with brush and ink for well over a thousand years. In that tradition, known in Japan as sumi-e, the empty paper matters as much as the mark, and a painter might practice a single bamboo stalk for years before it looks effortless. Western artists later took up ink for drawing and illustration, and contemporary artists mix both streams freely. You do not need the history to enjoy an ink piece, but it explains the medium's restraint. Ink values what is left out.

Why does ink reward close viewing?

Ink rewards close viewing because its beauty lives in small events: the feathered edge where a wet wash met dry paper, the grain of the sheet showing through a gray tone, the exact point where a stroke ran dry. From across the room an ink piece reads as quiet. From two feet away it opens up. That makes ink a natural fit for hallways, desks, and reading corners, places people pass close to the wall, and it is why many collectors start here or with our small original paintings. Grouped with pieces from our black and white and neutral art, the calm compounds.

How should you frame a work on paper?

Frame an ink painting behind glazing with an acid-free mat, so the paper is sealed from dust and humidity but never touches the glass. Paper is the fragile half of the equation; dry ink itself is remarkably stable. Be warned that good framing costs real money, sometimes more than a small ink piece itself, so budget for it from the start. Here is how the glazing options compare:

Frequently asked questions

Why do you carry so little ink work?

Because we only list ink pieces we would keep ourselves, and very few reach that line. Ink is unforgiving: a wrong line cannot be painted over the way oil can, so the work that survives our review is rare. What is here comes from Daniel Arvan, Amir Fazelian and Roshan, priced from about $200 to $850. Ask us and we will tell you when new ink work is coming.

One piece is painted on cardboard. Is that a problem for something I am paying real money for?

No, as long as you treat it as a work on paper and frame it behind glass. Amir Fazelian's watercolour and ink piece is on cardboard, a support artists have chosen deliberately for a long time. Keep it out of direct sun and off damp walls. If you want something to hang unframed and unglazed, choose one of the canvas pieces in this collection instead.

These are described as mixed media. Are they really ink paintings?

Most of them combine ink with something else, and we say so on every product page. You will see watercolour, acrylic and coloured pencil worked alongside the ink, because artists reach for ink to get line and edge, then need another material for body and colour. Pure ink work is rare. If you want ink alone, tell us and we will not hand you a mixed piece.

The shapes here are unusual. How do I hang a tall narrow piece?

Give it a wall that matches its shape. This collection includes a tall narrow work and a wide low one, roughly 44 to 71 cm across and 34 to 102 cm high, so they fit places a standard rectangle fails: a slim wall beside a door, the space over a console, a stair landing. Hang the centre at eye level for how the room is normally used.

Can I ask these artists for more ink work?

You can ask and we will pass it on, but we will not promise a date. Daniel Arvan, Amir Fazelian and Roshan each work at their own pace, and we would rather wait than push out weak work. What we can do is tell you when new ink pieces are underway, and unfinished work can be followed or claimed at /collections/watch-art-being-made.

What if I buy the ink work and it does not suit my sunny room?

Return it inside 14 days for a full refund and we pay the shipping back, with no explanation needed. That covers the honest test, which is watching a work on paper in your own light for two weeks. After that, the Lifetime Trade-Back exchanges it for store credit at any point. We will not pretend sunlight is harmless: keep ink off a wall taking direct afternoon sun.

Is an ink painting an original or a print?

Every ink painting we sell is an original: one physical object, painted by hand, signed by the artist, with a Certificate of Authenticity included. We do not sell prints or reproductions of any painting. The only printed work in our gallery is fine art photography by one photographer, and it is clearly labeled as such.

How much does an original ink painting cost?

Ink works are often the most affordable originals in a gallery because most are small or medium works on paper, and our prices start around $72. Larger or more layered pieces cost more. You are paying for the artist's hand and years of brush control, not for materials, which in ink are modest.

What size ink painting should I buy?

Choose by viewing distance rather than wall size. Ink is made for close viewing, so a small or medium piece beside a desk, in a hallway, or above a reading chair often works better than a large piece across a big room. If you want one artwork to command a wide wall from far away, ink is rarely the right pick.

How do I choose a good ink painting?

Look at the lines first. In strong ink work the strokes vary in weight, end cleanly, and look decisive, and the washes grade smoothly from dark to pale. Hesitant, scrubbed, or overworked marks are the warning signs. Then trust your reaction: if a piece makes you slow down and look closer, it is doing its job.

Will an ink painting fade over time?

Traditional carbon-based black inks are among the most stable materials in art, and ink works many centuries old survive in good condition. Colored inks vary more, so framing behind UV-protective glass and hanging away from direct sunlight is the sensible standard for any work on paper. Framed that way, an ink painting will outlast its owner.

How is an ink painting shipped?

We pack works on paper flat between rigid protective boards and ship free with full insurance from Vancouver: 3 to 7 business days within Canada and 5 to 10 to the USA. You also get a 14-day home trial, so if the piece does not suit the wall you refund in full and we pay the return shipping.

When should I not buy an ink painting?

Skip ink if you want a large field of saturated color to anchor a big wall from across the room. Ink is a quiet medium that rewards nearness, and asking it to shout is unfair to the work. In that case an acrylic or oil on canvas will serve the room better, and we would rather tell you that now.
