Inside the Studio: The Work of Daniel Arvan

Most paintings that reference ancient Egypt land in one of two places. They are either careful copies that belong in a textbook, or they borrow a few gold symbols for decoration and stop there. Daniel Arvan works somewhere else. He paints the ancient world in acrylic, in the present tense, and asks what those old symbols still mean to a person standing in front of them today.

Arvan's subjects are ancient civilizations, mythological themes, and cultural memory. Ancient Egypt runs through the work, along with classical mythology and the symbols that cultures keep passing down long after the people who made them are gone.
