Inside the Studio: The Work of Nahira

Look at any painting by Nahira and you meet a figure and a whale in the same frame, calm and strange at once. A woman sits in a red cloak while a blue whale floats above her. Another woman gazes up at whales set against a starry sky. These are not quiet decorative pictures, and they are not loud either. They sit in the space between recognition and abstraction, which is exactly where Nahira says she wants them.

A conversation between control and surrender

Nahira describes her own practice better than we can. In her artist statement she writes: "My work is a conversation between control and surrender. I begin with the figure, a body, a face, a gesture, and then I let the paint take over. The result is a tension between recognition and abstraction."

That tension is the whole point. She starts with something you can name, a woman, a chair, a whale, and then lets the paint pull it toward something you feel more than you read. Soft-edged figures rise out of atmospheric backgrounds. Nothing has a hard outline. The effect is closer to memory than to a photograph, which is why the same painting can feel different depending on the light in your room and your mood that day.

How the work is made

Nahira works primarily in acrylic on canvas. All three of the paintings we currently hold, "Calm in the Dark," "Terrifying Beauty," and "The Moment I Still Don't Know," are acrylic on stretched canvas, and each is an original, one-of-a-kind piece signed by the artist. There are no prints and no reproductions here. What you buy is the actual painted surface her hand moved across.

Her technique leans on layering and blending. She builds shifting forms and layered textures rather than flat blocks of color, and she uses tools like the palette knife alongside the brush. Color does a lot of the emotional work. For Nahira, color functions as a language that sets the tone and rhythm of each piece, and you can see that in her palette:

• Ochres and dusty pinks that keep the mood warm and human.
• Muted blues for the water, the whales, and the sense of open space.
• Occasional high-chroma moments, a sudden bright note against the calm, so the eye has somewhere to land.

What the paintings are about

The recurring subject is the human figure, usually a woman, placed inside a wide and dreamlike environment. Nahira's stated themes are human presence, vulnerability, feminine interiority, nature, transformation, and the pull between presence and absence. The whales that appear across her work are not there for decoration. They give the figures something vast and quiet to sit beside, which is how the paintings hold that mix of fear and calm at the same time. "Terrifying Beauty" says it in the title.

Her named inspirations include the Canadian landscape, Persian poetry, the human figure in contemporary dance, and the emotional resonance of color fields. You do not need to know any of that to feel the work, but it explains why the paintings feel both grounded and a little otherworldly.
